The Internet and multimedia as tools for developing oral and written expression

A basic course in the program: Studies toward a Specialization Certificate in the Didactics of Teaching Hebrew as a Foreign Language


Description:

In this course, the students will acquire novel teaching tools from the fields of the Internet and multimedia for developing Hebrew expression. The course will be based on the conception of the language first and foremost as a medium of expression. The teaching aids and methods to be employed will be examined with regard to their compatibility with the principle laid down here.
The course will be taught in Hebrew.

Course Objectives:
  1. To impart novel teaching tools for expression in Hebrew by means of a creative and informed use of the interactive properties of the Internet, multimedia and "new media"
  2. To match the above-mentioned tools to the teaching topics and to the level of the learners

Study Program:
  1. Introduction
    1. Picture and sound as a universal language – the secret of the power of the media
    2. Technology and content – an overview of the evolutionary development of audio and visual aids for Hebrew instruction
    3. An analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various tools vis-à-vis various target populations, taking into account age group, cultural characteristics and technological skills
    Final assignment for the unit
  2. Listening aids
    1. Hebrew music in the Internet
      1. Music as an agent of culture, time and place: Presentation and analysis of the various methods for teaching Hebrew through songs
      2. Language-innovating songs – cultural and linguistic reference points
      3. Protest songs – discursive aspects
      4. Songs from the sources – new vs. old in Israeli music
      5. Children's songs and teaching Hebrew to young children
    2. From Reshet Aleph to "Night Birds" – the use of Israeli radio's cultural-linguistic products for developing oral and written expression
    Final assignment for the unit
  3. Internet advanced applications
    1. Overview of software, presentations and sites that support Hebrew instruction on the net
    2. Blogs and Wikies – a new type of written expression
    3. Internet newspaper – editing Hebrew content in the hypertext world
    Final assignment for the unit
  4. Picture and sound – between viewing and creating
    1. Guided viewing of TV programs as tools for oral and written expression
    2. Goal-oriented TV broadcasts for learning Hebrew – broadcast and Internet
    3. Characteristics of language and culture in Israeli cinema
    4. "New media" – the creation of audiovisual contents in Hebrew, using free and accessible tools on the Internet
